EXPERT TIP

The key to this glamorous updo is height. Use a generous amount of mousse, then gently backcomb for best results. Don't forget to have plenty of small hairpins on hand.

HOW TO ACHIEVE THE LOOK

STEP 1

Wash and condition hair.

STEP 2

Towel-dry hair until damp and scrunch with a towel to help prevent damage and split ends.

STEP 3

Fill your left palm with styling mousse. With your right hand, use a wide-tooth comb to work the mousse into your hair, starting at the roots all the way to the tips.

step 4

Using your fingers, blow-dry hair until it is 40-50% dry.

STEP 5

Separate hair into 8-10 sections, each approximately 2 inches. We recommend 3-5 sections in the middle of your hair, and 2 each for the left and right sides of your hair. Starting with the top middle section of your head (at the crown), place tips of the hair over a large Velcro roller and roll the hair up to the scalp. Repeat in a descending fashion down the middle of your head.

STEP 6

For the sides of your hair, split each into 2 sections-a top and bottom section. Start with the top section of the hair; hold the roller sideways (the open end pointing upward) and place the tips of the hair over the roller, and roll up to the scalp. Repeat with the bottom layer as well as the other side. Rollers should be sideways (away from the face), as this will help create volume at the roots.

STEP 7

Once all rollers are in place, blow-dry hair until it is completely dry. Remove all rollers, taking out the bottom rollers first, and then the top rollers. Brush hair with a flat brush from root to tip. To Note: Hair shouldn't be curly; we're looking for volume and body.

STEP 8

Starting at the crown of your head (about 5 inches back from the forehead), split hair into 5-7 sections, clipping any bangs or long layers aside. Backcomb each section with a strong backcomb to create a foundation. Hairspray the backcombed area to give it more stability and texture.

STEP 9

Gather all backcombed sections together above the nape of the neck with your right hand. To create the updo, twist hair inward towards the left, about 3 rotations, using your left hand to help guide the hair into an upward twist. Upon the third rotation, your hair should look like an elongated banana shape. Tuck the ends of the hair into the twist and secure them with 8-10 bobby pins. All bobby pins should be angled down and hidden within the twist, pointing toward the nape of the neck.

STEP 10

Take the front or bang section of your hair (that had previously been set aside) and slightly backcomb it. Secure the tips of this section into the top of the twist with a bobby pin, again angling the bobby pin toward the nape of the neck. Make sure the front of your hair looks smooth when you're pinning it.

STEP 11

Seal this updo with an aerosol extra-hold hairspray, spraying it about 10 inches away from the hair.

STEP 12

For a more polished look, place a headband over the top of the head.
