EXPERT TIP

For instant volume and uplift at the crown, wind front portion of hair on Velcro rollers and blast with a hot blow-dryer to set. Finish with headband at hairline.

HOW TO ACHIEVE THE LOOK

STEP 1

Wash and condition hair.

STEP 2

Towel-dry hair until damp and scrunch with a towel to help prevent damage and split ends.

STEP 3

Fill your left palm with styling mousse. With your right hand, use a wide-tooth comb to work the product into your hair, starting at the roots all the way to the tips. Blow-dry hair with a skeleton brush until it’s 80% dry.

STEP 4

Separate hair into 10-12 sections, each approximately 2 inches. We recommend 5-6 sections in the middle of your hair, and 2-3 for each of the left and right sides of your hair. Starting with the top-middle section of your head (right at the crown), place tips of the hair over a large Velcro roller, and roll it up to the scalp. Repeat in a descending fashion down the middle of your head.

STEP 5

For the sides of your hair, split each side’s hair into 2 sections—a top and bottom section. Start with the top section of the hair; hold the roller sideways (the open end pointing upward) and place the tips of the hair over the roller, and roll up to the scalp. Repeat with the bottom layer as well as the other side. Rollers should be sideways, as this will help create volume at the roots.

STEP 6

Once all rollers are in place, blow-dry hair until completely dry. Remove all rollers, taking out the bottom ones first, then the top ones. Brush hair with a flat brush from root to tip. Note: Hair shouldn’t be curly; we’re looking for volume and body.

STEP 7

Separating the top and bottom layers of the hair, begin backcombing the top layer in sections, starting with the top of the head (about 3 inches from the hair line). After the middle is backcombed, repeat with the sides, spraying the roots of each section with hairspray after backcombing.

STEP 8

Once backcombed, use a small brush to lightly brush the surface of the hair, ensuring you don’t remove the backcombing effect; you’re brushing just to make the hair look smooth.

STEP 9

Place a thick headband on your forehead and slide it back in a fluid motion, stopping about 2 inches away from the hairline. Secure this medium-length hairstyle with hairspray all over your hair.
